Getting started

After a 30 year break I took up sewing again.  I realized that I have made some lovely and unlovely projects in the past year.  I've been posting to facebook, but perhaps others can learn from my mistakes and reviews.

My first project was a simple cowel neck t-shirt made from Simplicty 1945.  I like several of the items in the pattern and think that the sportswear patterns are the best deal as they offer so many options.

I made the cowl - no picture but because I've been so peeved at how LONG t-shirts are I decided to tweak the length a bit.  Yikes, now it looks a little off balance because the cowl is so elegant and the length is chopped off.

Oh well, my next effort went better.  I made a beautiful knit dress for my sister.  She is one of the most elegant women I know and I was so happy she allowed me to use her as my muse.
Doesn't she look great.  This is V8825.  I had to reduce the bulk in the sleeves, they were HUGE bells and really threw the whole thing off balance.  Also, the cuffs were too large and with the weight of the sleeves they hung down below her hands.  Awkward.  I remedied that by taking an inch out of the diameter of the cuffs and 2 inches out of the sleeves.  Turned out lovely.

I loved the fabric so much, I used the Simplicity 1945 pattern again and made a va-va-vavoom faux-wrap top for myself.

I told you, va-va-vavoom.  This shirt was really easy to make.  The instructions were super easy to follow, expecially compared to Vogue.

At the same time I was working on these projects, I also started crafting items for my friends, Heidi and Gretchen.

Heidi is a fire-ball and I am so lucky to have her in my life.  In the picture above, I'm standing in front of her Christmas tree.

I made a tweed skirt for Heidi from Simplicity 2475.  I really love the Amazing Fit series as they give instructions for fitting that really help when you are working with someone else's shape.  I was pretty happy with the end product of this skirt, however it took 5 tries to get the zipper in (still not happy with it); because the tweed was a little scratchy I tried to line the skirt and it looks very ill-made.  I have learned SO much since these first few projects.

Here's Heidi in the finished skirt .  Love the pocket detail.  .

I made Gretchen this dress from V1220 a Donna Karan pattern.  I was really happy with how this dress sewed up.  I used a slubbed gray denim with about 5% spandex.  It looks so professional.
